Q:What project have you done that has been the most well received or helpful for your students?

A1-
We have created video game controller prototypes with cardboard, foil, and Makey Makey devices. The students absolutely loved it and really understood electrical circuits, conductors/insulators, as well as the design process. The part I think was most impacting was taking the students through design thinking processes I learned about through #dtk12chat on Twitter.
A2-
Our high school students love making for a cause. The projects have real-world purpose and makes a difference in their community and the world. We do a lot of collaboration with our FACS/sewing teacher, too. Students have made catnip toys for the town animal shelter and Little Dresses for Africa. I think students learn best when they see real world applications and it also sets them up for a lifetime of civic engagement and social action (hopefully). Some of our projects are described here: http://www.slj.com/2016/10/programs/struck-by-tragedy-a-ny-high-school-heals-through-compassionate-making/ or take a look at https://ginaseymour.com/

A3-
I would say using Makey Makey with 3rd graders has taught them the most about electric circuits, conductors, insulators, and prototyping. I’d also say, from a low tech perspective, using The Extraordinaires Design Studio impacted my students the most when it came to creativity and empathy in design.
